]]> Chris Braithwaite stumbled into journalism in 1964 and found a job with the Brampton (Ontario) Times & Conservator for $45 a week. Subsequently, he worked in the field at the Anderson (California) Valley News, the Portland Oregonian and the Los Angeles bureau of Newsweek while obtaining a BA in economics from Pomona College. He went to work for the Toronto Globe & Mail on its Report on Business in 1969, dropped out to northeastern Vermont in 1970, and recovered by founding the weekly Barton Chronicle there in 1974.

I thought it added to the Easter basket experience as it seemed to make the Easter Bunny a more genuine creature. Being an animal, wouldn’t he/she be more likely to use fresh, fragrant hay rather than a manufactured, plastic product?

]]> Polly’s Pancake Parlor was built about 1830. It was originally used as a carriage shed and was later used for storage of firewood. During the depression of the thirties Polly and Wilfred (Sugar Bill) Dexter converted the building to a small, quaint tea room (capacity – 24 people). When they started serving in 1938 they offered pancakes, waffles and French toast – “All you can eat for 50¢.” The idea was to stimulate sales of their maple products.
